WordPress vs Shopify for Indian online stores

A practical comparison of WordPress with WooCommerce and Shopify for an online store selling in India: payments, cash on delivery, shipping, control, running the store and when each one makes sense.

If you are starting or rebuilding an online store in India, the choice usually comes down to two platforms: WordPress with WooCommerce, or Shopify. Both work with the payment gateways and courier services Indian shoppers expect, and both can look exactly the way you want. They differ in who looks after the technology, how much control you have and how the costs are structured. This guide compares them on the points that matter most for an Indian store.

How are WooCommerce and Shopify different?

WordPress with WooCommerce is open-source software. WordPress runs the website and WooCommerce, a free plugin, adds the store. You install them on hosting you choose, including hosting in Indian data centres, and you own and control every file and every row of data. You are also responsible for updates, security, backups and speed, or for paying someone to look after them.

Shopify is a hosted platform you subscribe to. Shopify runs the servers, applies security updates and manages the checkout, and it publishes its own security and compliance information for payments. You manage products, orders and design from Shopify's admin, but you work within Shopify's rules: the checkout can only be changed in the ways Shopify allows, and much extra functionality comes from paid apps.

Which handles Indian payments better?

Both platforms work with the main Indian payment gateways. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and CCAvenue all offer WooCommerce plugins and Shopify integrations, so customers can pay with UPI, cards, net banking and wallets on either platform.

There are a few differences to check:

  • Shopify Payments is Shopify's own payment provider, but it is not available for stores based in India. Indian Shopify stores use a third-party gateway, and Shopify charges an additional transaction fee on some plans when a third-party gateway is used. Check Shopify's pricing page for the current fee for your plan.
  • WooCommerce does not charge platform transaction fees. You pay your payment gateway's charges and your hosting.
  • Cash on delivery is still important for many Indian shoppers. WooCommerce includes a cash on delivery payment method out of the box, and Shopify supports it as a manual payment method. Gateway and shipping providers also offer COD verification and partial-prepaid options on both platforms.

What about shipping and couriers?

Shipping aggregators such as Shiprocket offer integrations for both WooCommerce and Shopify, and many individual couriers, including Delhivery, have their own. These integrations import orders, generate shipping labels, provide tracking and handle cash on delivery remittance. Before you choose, check that the courier partners you want to use work with your platform, and test the full flow from order to delivery to return.

For invoices, both platforms need a plugin or app to produce invoices in the format your accountant needs. Ask your accountant what each invoice must show before you choose one.

Which is easier to run every day?

For a small team without a developer, Shopify is usually easier to run. There are no servers to manage, updates happen automatically and the admin app works well on a phone. Busy periods such as festive sales are handled by Shopify's infrastructure.

WooCommerce is just as easy to use day to day once it is set up well, but somebody has to look after the technical side: updating WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins, monitoring speed and security, and taking backups. A store that is not maintained becomes slow and vulnerable. If you choose WooCommerce, budget for good hosting and regular maintenance from the start.

Which gives you more control?

WooCommerce gives you more. You can change any part of the store, including the checkout, add custom fields, connect to any system with an API and move to a different host whenever you like. Because WordPress started as a publishing platform, it is also very strong for content: blogs, buying guides and landing pages in English, Hindi or other Indian languages with translation plugins.

Shopify gives you less control but more consistency. Themes are built in Liquid, apps extend the admin and the storefront, and Shopify Functions and checkout extensions allow certain checkout changes. Deeper checkout customisation is reserved for Shopify Plus. If you might later sell across several countries, Shopify Markets helps manage currencies and languages from one store.

How do the running costs compare?

The two platforms charge in different ways, so compare the total over two or three years rather than the first month:

  • Shopify: a monthly plan, any paid theme, monthly app subscriptions, plus payment gateway charges and any Shopify transaction fees.
  • WooCommerce: hosting, a domain, any premium theme and plugins (often billed yearly), regular maintenance, plus payment gateway charges.

Apps and plugins are where costs grow quietly on both platforms. List the features you need and check how each one would be provided: built in, free, or paid every month or year.

Which should you choose?

As a rule of thumb:

  • Choose Shopify if you want to launch quickly, have a straightforward catalogue, do not have technical staff and prefer a predictable monthly subscription with hosting and security handled for you.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress website with a lot of content, need unusual product options or checkout steps, want to keep data on hosting you control, or want to avoid platform transaction fees and can arrange maintenance.

Both are good platforms; a well-built store on either one will serve most Indian businesses well. We build stores on both. See our Shopify development and ecommerce development in India pages, or read about website development in India if your store is part of a larger site.

FAQ

Questions we hear often.

Can I accept UPI payments on both Shopify and WooCommerce?

Yes. Indian payment gateways such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and CCAvenue offer integrations for both platforms, and they support UPI along with cards, net banking and wallets.

Is Shopify Payments available in India?

No. Stores based in India use a third-party payment gateway on Shopify. Shopify may charge an additional transaction fee on some plans when a third-party gateway is used, so check its pricing page.

Does WooCommerce support cash on delivery?

Yes. WooCommerce includes a cash on delivery payment method, and shipping partners such as Shiprocket handle COD orders and remittance. Shopify also supports cash on delivery as a manual payment method.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later, or the other way?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated between the two, with redirects from old URLs to new ones. Plan the migration carefully so search rankings and links are not lost.
